Toyota Etios Liva Exteriors

The new Etios Liva has received exterior tweaks as well. At the front, the car gets revised bumper and redesigned grille which enhance the overall front profile. The animation on the smiling grille and the chrome highlights on the revamped fog lamp housing need special mention here. The traditional headlamps remain identical.

The side profile is flanked by 15-inch alloy wheels which were first seen in the Sportivo model. The lower variants get 14-inch wheels. The panel on the roof are ribbed to keep it light and rigid. The flat type door handles are outdated, in fact, more than one and a half decade back which is something the carmaker has to seriously look into. The ORVMs with integrated turn indicators remain the same streamlined units that gels well with the overall design.

The rear bumper has also been restyled while the tail lamps remain the same well-designed unit which perfectly suits the rear profile. The thick chrome strip which was there in the earlier version has been removed while the sweet rear spoiler has been retained which looks pretty good, especially on the dual tone version. Overall, Toyota has given decent cosmetic changes which add to the sporty character of the car.

The overall layout remains unchanged from when the hatchback was launched but gets a colour upgrade with a dual tone setup in black for the dashboard and beige for the rest of the cabin. The centrally mounted instrument cluster now gets a digital tachometer and trip metre lending modernity to the design. However, we feel that the latter could have been a bit more comprehensive and included things like a distance to empty meter.

There is not much to speak about in terms of features as a car gets everything that is considered basic in the segment. This list includes a 2-DIN music system, AC, height adjustment for the driver’s seat and a massive 13-litre cooled glove. The quality of plastic both on the contact and non-contact surfaces is not that great and still lags behind competition. However, their hard and grainy nature means that they are long lasting.The front seats themselves are quite comfortable and offer decent support. The rear seats on the other hand, while offering similar levels of comfort, lack head room due to the odd roofline which is quite prominent on the right-hand side where there is one of the mounting points for the middle seatbelt.

Where Toyota spent a large part of its update budget is to make the Etios Liva high on the safety front. In view of the Central Government introducing new protection standards from 2018 onwards, Toyota has fitted the Etios Liva with dual front airbags, adjustable headrests, ABS with EBD and seatbelts with pre-tensioners as well as force limiters across the range. In addition you now also get a three-point seat belt for the middle rear passenger and two ISOFIX mounting points at the rear for child seats. What this has resulted in is a 4-Star Global NCAP adult safety rating across all three body styles that the Etios is offered in. The engine options remain the same in the new Etios Liva. Talking about the petrol one, the 1.2L 4-cylinder DOHC engine produces 80PS and 104Nm of torque, paired to 5-speed manual transmission. The diesel engine on the other hand, is the 1.4L 4-cylinder SOHC unit which pumps out 68PS and 170Nm of max torque, mated to 5-speed manual transmission. It’s a pity that still the car is not available with the automatic option when even the cars below segment are offering it.

Nevertheless, the petrol one is the free-revving one start off the line pretty quickly giving lively driving experience in the cities. This is possible through good-mid range and the light clutch. The 5-speed manual gearbox does the job of slotting with least effort. Even for daily commuters who are devoting a lot of time struggling through the busy traffic won’t find any reason to complain as far as comfort is concerned.

The progress becomes less inspiring when you leave city premises and head on to open stretches. Once you get into the triple digit speed, don’t expect the car to pull strongly. However, irrespective whether you are driving in cities or highways, the engine remains fairly smooth. The diesel engine on the other hand is the same working in Corolla Altis. The carmaker has emphasized the drivability of the engine through wide band of torque.

Start the engine and you will witness that the 1.4L turbo-diesel motor settles down to a refined idle state with minimum clatter. Initially, there is some clatter like typical diesel engines do, but once the engine warms up, it becomes quiet on the outside. The power is transferred in a linear manner while there is minimal turbo lag and one can upshift early without getting stuck. The mid-range performance of the diesel engine is quite good and the overall drivability is quite better than Ford Figo.In terms of fuel efficiency, the new Toyota Etios Liva does justice especially when we look at the competition. Where the petrol powered Liva returns ARAI certified mileage of 17.71kmpl, the diesel one on the other hand, is good for delivering 23.59kmpl. Toyota Etios Liva Driving

Progress is less impressive once you leave the city and hit highway speeds. The measly output means the Liva doesn’t pull as strongly as you would like, once above triple digit speeds. While the engine itself remains decently smooth if not the smoothest in class, the cabin is slightly on the noisy side. There’s some amount of road noise and wind noise filtering into the cabin – it’s not a concern within the city, but it’s definitely a factor on the highway.

Like the old car, the ride quality is perhaps the strongest suite of the updated Liva. As you would expect, the suspension setup is on the softer side, however, the calibration is such that the Liva never feels overly soft or loose, even over large bumps and imperfections. At highway speeds it does tend to bounce around a bit especially when unladen but again, it’s not a worry at all. Overall, the ride quality is pretty much at the top in this segment.
