Audi A4 Overview
The Audi A4 has been a strong seller in India. It might not be the most talked about car in its class, but according to Audi it has been the most consistent in terms of sales, the advent of newer and updated competitors notwithstanding. And with the introduction of this, the latest generation of the A4, due in a couple of months time in India, Audi believes, it has a winner on its hands. The new A4 is based on a completely different platform from the existing car. It uses the Volkswagen Group’s new, more technologically advanced MLB platform and it will be assembled in India when launched. The new car is 120kg lighter than the current car; is longer and wider; and it sits on a longer wheelbase too. It also gets an updated, more powerful version of the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine. And this time round, it is mated to a 7-speed dual clutch automatic instead of a CVT as seen on the current A4. Here’s what it is like… For information on contact details of Audi car dealers in Pune
Audi A4 Exterior & Style
As we mentioned, the new A4 is bigger than the current car in every dimension. And this is obvious when one looks at the car in the flesh. What’s also obvious is that Audi designers haven’t been too adventurous with the new car’s design. It is more of an evolution of the current car. But, it does look smarter and more premium. The headlights are new and now come with the option of Matrix LEDs. The hood gets four clear ridges to add visual muscle to the car. And besides that gaping chrome grille, the latest Audi design signature, the new A4 also has a better-defined bumper, the lower half in particular. It still has similar proportions in profile though, and even at the rear, there’s no real awe inducing style element. The new tail lamps, however, do look much nicer now.
Audi A4 Interior & Space
Again, there’s nothing new to report about the diesel A4 here; the cabin is identical to the A4 30 TFSI petrol car. That is to say it’s a very modern Audi cabin that scores big for material quality and ambience. Audi’s brilliant ‘Virtual Cockpit’ digital instruments (only on this top-spec Technology trim car), MMI infotainment system and haptic buttons for the air-con that preview the function as you run your finger on them make the cabin look and feel cutting-edge. Front seat comfort is good and passengers in the back also get plenty of room to sit comfortably. The all-important rear seat is well padded but it’s a place best suited for two occupants; the middle passenger will find space tight.
Audi A4 Engine & Performance
The Audi A4 specifications feature a 1,395 cc 4-cylinder engine with turbo mechanism and Audi valve lift system. The petrol engine can deliver power of 150 PS between 5000 to 6000 rpm and torque of 250 Nm between 1500-3500 rpm. The transmission system features a 7-speed S-Tronic automatic transmission systems and the drive is connected to the front wheels. The new A4 is lighter than the current car we already know that. But, Audi has also worked on the car’s multi link suspension front and back to give the new A4 better driving dynamics. Even though it is larger than before, on the road, and especially around bends, the new A4 feels tighter and more manageable than the current car. Its steering still isn’t great in terms of feel, but the response and alertness makes it feel light-footed.
The engine, with more power and torque and a lighter car at its disposal, feels quite peppy. It still is the 2.0-litre diesel that powers the current A4, but has been improved to deliver more power and torque and higher fuel efficiency. It makes 188bhp of max power and 400Nm of peak torque putting it level with the quickest car in the class, the BMW 3 Series. And it feels alive and effortless to drive. One rarely needs to rev it past 2,000rpm courtesy strong pulling power and a very reactive DSG gearbox. The car is quieter inside the cabin as well and it’s only when you choose to drive the car in Sport mode (activated via the gear shifter) can you hear the engine drone inside thanks to the diesel unit’s refusal to settle below the 2,000rpm mark.
Audi A4 Driving Dynamics
The Audi A4 features an electromechanical power steering with high functionality buttons on the steering wheel for easy and effective control of the equipment. The Audi drive select enables the driver to select an accurate driving mode for effective combination of power and fuel economy. The cruise control feature provides comfort during long drives, and the hill hold assist helps in easy handling on high gradient roads. The compromise brings in the more feel-some steering from the sporty mode while doing away with its mildly jerky low-speed power delivery. The driving modes don’t alter the A4’s suspension characteristics, but the stock setup is rather nice as is. Bump absorption is excellent and the overall ride quality is largely free from that typical firmness we’ve come to expect from European cars. That the suspension does its work quietly is also something that helps maintain the calm in the cabin. If there’s something to bring up, it’s that there is perhaps a bit more up and down movement at triple-digit speeds compared to the petrol engine car. But even so, the A4 diesel feels well damped at all times.
Audi A4 Braking & Safety
The Audi A4 features disc brakes with calipers and anti-lock braking system, and electronic stability control program for effective braking and controlling. The Audi A4 specifications for safety include front airbags for the driver and co-passenger, head airbags, and side airbags for the rear seat occupants. The additional safety features include a reversing camera, and parking aid at the front and rear for safe parking of the car.

Audi A4 Conclusion
Recommending the new A4 to anybody so far has always included a caveat about the petrol engine. It’s a good engine, no doubt, but comes across as a bit underwhelming for a luxury car. With this diesel engine, the A4 finally gets the power it always deserved. The diesel engine is strong, refined and, with an ARAI-tested fuel-economy of 18.25kpl, promises to be fuel efficient too. In fact, the diesel engine immediately makes the new A4 feel more complete and elevates it in terms of desirability. Also, with a price tag of Rs 40.2- 43.3 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the A4 35 TDI is competitively priced by class standards. The long wait for the A4 diesel has been worth it.
