Mahindra Verito Vibe Design
The Verito Vibe may look like a hatchback at first but it actually has a fixed rear windscreen, which technically makes it notchback. Unlike most of the competition that began with a hatch and engineered a boot later on, Mahindra went the other way around by lopping the boot off a Verito sedan. The effect is obvious because, besides some smart looking 14-inch alloy wheels, a new carbon-shade grille and smoked headlamps, the rest of the car is identical.
The benefit of the exercise is that Mahindra now have a very spacious boot by hatchback standards, but using the 330 litres of space can be tedious thanks to a high and narrow loading bay. Mahindra haven’t given the Vibe a rear wash wipe either. The styling highlight has to be the Ford Focus/Volvo style pillar-mounted LED tail lamps. The LED elements are a segment first and we have to admit that they do look rather fetching once the sun goes down. The rest of the car remains the inoffensive but insipid design we’ve gotten used to with the Verito.
The car carries the interiors straightforward from the sedan sibling and it’s not a bad thing either. Irrespective of the polarized opinions of the lack of styling outside, the car scores brownie points when it comes to practicality in the cabin. In fact, it is one of the most spacious vehicles in its segment with front seats able to absorb full grown adults. There is plenty of leg room and knee room at the rear as three adults can sit comfortably with the bench itself sufficiently plush. And despite the car getting a sloping windscreen at the rear, the tall people wouldn’t bother about headroom.
In terms of storage, there are enough cubby holes across the cabin to stow loose items with the small notch in the dashboard above the glovebox would come handy as well. The quality of seat fabrics and plastic is similar to what we have seen in the Verito with an elegant mock carbon fibre treatment given to the centre console. The beige and grey colour interior theme has been carried forward while the dashboard gets a dual-toned beige and black treatment. Verito bros share the same instrument panel having a crispy large dials for the speedo and the tachometer. In the center, there is multi-information display showing relevant information of the vehicle including odometer, fuel consumed since start, average speed, average kmpl, distance travelled and time. The lack of premiumness is evident from the fact that the steering wheel does not have mounted controls. This is something not expected from a car in this price segment. There no climate control but the same air conditioner with cabin heater which work average. The music system is the same we have seen in other cars from Mahindra. It’s a 2-DIN stereo system with USB, CD and Aux-in connectivity with decibels powered by Blaupunkt speakers.
The car might have shed some of its length but the boot is still generous with 330L of space. The only point of concern for some would be to load and unload the luggage since the access is small due to fixed rear windscreen. Overall, the interiors are satisfactory but not contemporary in any sense.
Mahindra Verito Vibe Performance
The Verito Vibe is powered by 1.5L dCi engine shared from Renault. The motor is undoubtedly a tried and tested unit with excellent track record. The powertrain is mated to 5-speed manual gearbox which does a nice job with sorted ratios means the car does not hesitate in high gears at low rpms. And just like the sedan sibling, the Verito Vibe with this engine is very much drivable with weight shedding has even made it better. The detuned version of the K9K engine pumps out 64PS and 160Nm of torque.
The numbers might not appear sufficient on paper, but in real world, these figures do a good job. There is minimal turbo lag and the power delivery is quite linear just like a petrol engine. In city driving, the engine really offers what a typical carbuyer would expect.The Verito Vibe returns ARAI certified mileage of 20.8kmpl but in real world driving conditions, it can easily give around 16-17kmpl. Though the numbers are not excellent when we look at what competition is offering, still it would be easy on pockets when it comes to daily commute.
Mahindra Verito Vibe Driving
Again, the Vibe feels very similar to the Verito. Power comes from the same Renault 1.5-litre K9K engine that produces 65PS and 160Nm of torque. Drivability never gets exciting, but the car offers great low-down pull with hardly any lag and an adequate but progressive power delivery. The clutch is one of the lightest we have experienced in a diesel but the heavy steering will take some getting used to.Neither the steering wheel nor the driver’s seat get height adjustability, but the driving position is comfortable and this is an easy and effortless car to drive in city. Mahindra likes to describe the Vibe as sporty but it absolutely isn’t. It rides well and is a natural and safe-feeling handler, but there’s absolutely no sportiness in this package.

Brakes of Verito Vibe are pretty effective but lack the feel of confidence that many other cars have. In the safety department, if you look from the contemporary standards, you would be a bit disappointed as only top variants are loaded with crucial safety aspects including ABS with EBD and driver side airbag. Other safety measures which are standard include collapsible steering column, adjustable front seat belts and anti-theft engine immobilizer.
