Toyota Etios Cross Overview

Toyota seemed to be in a similar mood when they announced Etios Cross at the 12th Auto Expo in India. One associates the brand primarily with two models; the Innova and Fortuner. The former is the ultimate MPV while the latter is a popular premium SUV in India.

Unfortunately, the fame and success enjoyed by the above models never crumbled down on its entry level cars. Etios Liva, which marked an entry in the hatch segment, could not battle it out with the competition. Lack of premium interiors and dated design made buyers shy away from it. To regain lost confidence and engage more with the adventurous type, Toyota launched the Etios Cross. This crossover claims to be bold with an attitude. Our first impression report reveals more on it.

Toyota Etios Cross Look

From the front the Toyota Etios Cross sports a new smiling grill that stretches from light to light that later extends down like a chinese mustache. The lights though similar to the old a elongated on the inner side to match the grill. The new bumper is huge and very sporty and is loaded with a lot of cladding to put on the crossover mask. Beside the silver mustache at the base of the bumper on each side are the fog lamps that looks like two dimples on the cheek. This is something you may find in WRC rally cars. Just the huge spoiler at the back is missing.

The is also a silver cladding at the base like a small goatee on the face. There is a cladding that starts from the front to the side and flows into the rear too. From the side the Toyota Etios Cross is the same except for 3 changes. Now the indicators are on the mirrors and the sharp design is lovely and the other being the new chrome multi spoke alloys adds a sporty feel with sophistication and body cladding for the crossover effect. The side cladding is divided into two parts the fibre at the top and a silver touch at the base.

The rear too is the same but now the entire bumper is fibre and has a silver cladding in the centre. Unfortunately it misses out on sensors like the Etios and Viva. There is a fibre cladding on the bootlid too which houses the ETIOS CROSS badging. The tail lamps are clear and remain unchanged.

Step inside the Etios Cross and you find yourself in a familiar cabin. The layout of the dashboard hasn’t changed which is dissapointing as the centrally mounted instrument cluster is still not easy to read on the move. That said, the cabin looks much improved thanks to the use of piano black inserts on the doors, instrument cluster and centre console. Quality inside seems improved as well but is still not up to Toyota’s legendary standards. Our test car which had done only 130 kms showed signs of rattling over bad roads, which can be attributed to the light weight of the vehicle.

The other change to the interiors is the Etios Cross badging on the seats. There is ample amount of room inside the cabin, with rear seat passengers having enough space to stretch out in utmost comfort. Even the seats offer good support making the Etios a comfortable car to be in. The boot is reasonably big at 251-litres and it’s when you close the boot lid do you realise the Etios is a very light car. Toyota is offering the Etios Cross in 4 variants – G, V, GD and VD. All variants get a 2-DIN audio system with MP3, FM and USB functions but the top-spec trim also gets steering mounted audio controls and Bluetooth connectivity. The Etios Cross comes loaded with quite a few features even on the base trim but the lack of internally adjustable ORVMs is a shocking omission.

The Etios Cross comes in three engine trims, namely the 1.2L and 1.5L petrol and the 1.4L diesel. We managed to do a very short spin on the 1.5L petrol and 1.4L diesel.Even though it was a short drive, the 1.5L Petrol engine left a positive impact. It is the same which comes on the TRD Sportivo hatch. The four cylinder 1496 cc petrol engine produces 90PS of power at 5600 rpm and 132 Nm of torque at 3000 rpm. All the engines come with a standard 5 speed manual transmission.

The engine feels very peppy and it sounds impressive at higher engine speeds. It produces good power even at lower engine speeds which is great in stop go traffic. During our test run on Mumbai streets, the engine just kept revving and had enough punch for a broad speed range. Since it is just a namesake crossover with plastic claddings, the suspension settings have not been changed. It comes with ventilated disc brakes in front and drum brakes at rear. We couldn’t push it to its limits but were satisfied with its dynamics if not happy with it.

After the peppy 1.5L petrol, it was time to drive the 1.4L diesel. To begin with, the engine has a very typical diesel rattle. The shifts aren’t as smooth as the petrol unit and for obvious reasons. The four cylinder 1364cc diesel engine produces a power of 68PS at 3800rpm and a torque of 170Nm at 1800-2400rpm.

Instead of being a demanding driver, we decided to give the diesel a fare chance. The diesel unlike the bigger displacing petrol unit is not an agile unit. It has to be at a sufficient 2000 rpm to start generating power. This one has a linear but strong power delivery. In traffic situations, the engine would feel suffocating slow but on open stretches it feels more comfortable. Also this one claims to deliver 23.59 kmpl while the 1.5L petrol claims 16.78Kmpl.

Toyota’s motives are clear here. A car that can take you from point A to point B. There can’t be anything more clear than the 900 km range for the diesel. The steering is super light and the suspension super soft. But on the flip side the soft suspension and the 170 mm ground clearance make the car top heavy on corners and give a bit of body roll. Though it makes it very easy to ride in daily traffic and highway drives too are good but you can’t push the car around too hard.

The diesel engine is a bit noisy if pushed too hard. If we compare the petrol to the diesel, the petrol is better for quick city stints. And the diesel is an effortless mile muncher, at the same time the diesel has taller gears thanks to the enormous torque hence leading to lesser gear shifts. The option of 1.2 and 1.5 petrol gives you a choice between efficiency and performance. Toyota Etios Cross Safety

The Etios Cross also has been equipped with ABS and EBD.The fog lamps offer better visibility during bad weather conditions. The vehicle also has been fitted with front airbags for driver and passenger, plus bars side impact protection. It also has alarm on all doors beside the engine immobilizer system for anti theft security.

Toyota Etios Cross Verdict

The Etios Cross looks rugged and retains the same Etios range of engines. It is easy to drive and comfortable too. However, the badge Cross doesn’t justify as its ground clearance hasn’t been improved and the Etios Cross has an increase of just 4mm. This is more of a cosmetic upgrade, hence the price hike should be much.
